German Import Growth Cools Sharply in April, Signaling Softer Demand

Germany’s import growth slowed markedly in April 2026, pointing to a possible cooling in domestic demand and industrial activity in Europe’s largest economy.

Month-over-month, imports rose by just 1.2% in April, a sharp deceleration from the 5.1% increase recorded in March 2026. The data, updated on 09 June 2026, show that while German imports continued to grow, the pace of expansion has moderated significantly compared with the previous month.

On a comparative basis, the “Actual” figure reflects the change in imports from March to April 2026, while the “Previous” indicator captured the jump from February to March 2026. The slowdown suggests that the strong rebound seen in March was not sustained into April, and may indicate that German firms and consumers have become more cautious in their purchasing from abroad as the second quarter unfolds.
