Surprisingly, French President Emmanuel Macron affirms that tariffs on EU goods are unprofitable for the United States. However, US President Donald Trump pushes ahead with his protectionist rhetoric.
The French leader is convinced that imposing American sanctions on the EU will backfire on the US economy. However, Trump is poised to unleash a full-blown trade war. Earlier, Macron stated that the European Union is unlikely to be a "priority issue" for the White House. From his viewpoint, Washington's main threat is Beijing. Hence, efforts should be focused there.
"There is no need to harm the European economy by threatening it with tariffs. Imposing tariffs on particular industries will raise prices and fuel inflation in the US," Macron added. The French leader also reminded that the EU buys digital services from the US.
Notably, in early February, President Trump initiated tariffs against Mexico, Canada, and China. Moreover, the White House chief has threatened to impose tariffs on imports from the European Union retaliating against the "terrible treatment" of US companies by the EU authorities.
