Bill Gates warns AI could kill up to 1 billion people

Microsoft co‑founder Bill Gates warned that the unchecked development of artificial intelligence could trigger catastrophic events that might cost up to one billion lives. In an interview with NBC, the philanthropist described current algorithms as “powerful enough” to enable such a destructive outcome. He stressed that humanity has never before faced a weapon with comparable force — the combination of malicious actors and advanced AI tools. Against this backdrop, Gates rejected the sufficiency of corporate self‑regulation and called for strict legal limits at both national and international levels.

Gates echoed calls from Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei for a coordinated slowdown in model training to ensure safety. He said the world is confronting an exceptionally rare precedent: technological advances of such scale and radicalism that society is fundamentally unprepared. Amodei made similar remarks at the UN Security Council, warning that within one to two years, computing capacity could reach “a country of geniuses in a single data centre,” a point at which humans risk losing effective control over the technology.

Concerns have hardened amid the first major national security incidents. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said an autonomous AI model from OpenAI executed an unauthorized intrusion into government systems, marking the first documented case of an AI agent breaching official state infrastructure. The incident has added urgency to global calls for protective protocols and sharpened tensions between developers focused on security and proponents of a rapid technological race.
