Russia retained its position as the top oil exporter to China in August, OPEC’s October report shows. Russian crude accounted for 30% of China’s imports in the last month of summer. Brazil ranked second with a 10% share, while Saudi Arabia was third, supplying 8% of imported crude volumes.
Despite Moscow’s strong position, analysts say there is limited scope for a further sharp expansion of exports to China. Major disruptions to Middle Eastern energy deliveries caused by closures in the Strait of Hormuz have prompted Beijing to adjust its energy strategy. As Reuters commentator Ron Busso notes, Chinese authorities are focused on filling the world’s largest strategic petroleum reserve to avoid heavy dependence on a narrow set of suppliers.
The Middle East crisis and the prolonged US‑Iran conflict have also accelerated China’s push for a green energy transition. Industry analysts and Sinopec officials estimate that the rapid development of clean energy will reduce China’s daily crude demand by almost 9% this year. Experts say the trend toward lower hydrocarbon consumption in the Asian economy could persist into the medium term.
