The Federal Reserve left its policy rate unchanged at 3.75%–4.00% following the October 27–28 FOMC meeting. That decision matched market expectations after September’s 25‑basis‑point rate hike, the first increase since July 2023. The pause was not unanimous: ten committee members supported holding rates steady, while Fed Governor Lisa Cook and Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack voted for another quarter‑point rise.
According to Fed Chair Kevin Warsh, the labor market remains resilient, with the economy still growing at a healthy pace, driven by a tech and AI investment boom. Yet inflation remains the Fed’s central challenge. Consumer prices have been above the 2% target for nearly six years, and returning to that goal is the regulator’s explicit mandate. The committee also signaled a move away from rigid forward guidance, shifting to a meeting‑by‑meeting assessment of incoming data.
Warsh forcefully rejected suggestions that the Fed was succumbing to political pressure ahead of the midterm congressional elections. He described recent spikes in living costs and gasoline prices tied to Middle East tensions as largely temporary. The Fed also announced a tweak to the FOMC’s operating model: starting in 2027, one of eight annual meetings will be devoted to long‑term strategic discussion without a rate vote, and from 2028, the number of such strategy sessions will rise to two.
Markets reacted with cautious optimism. The Dow Jones, the S&P 500, and the Nasdaq closed up about 0.19%–0.28%. US Treasury yields remained above 5% amid expectations that financial conditions will stay relatively tight for an extended period.
