Canadian retail sales rise below expectations

According to Statistics Canada, the country’s retail sales grew by 0.2% in November 2016 after rising by 1.1% in October. Meanwhile, analysts had expected a 0.5% increase in sales.

The value of retail sales came in at a seasonally adjusted 45.23 billion Canadian dollars. On a 12-month basis, nominal retail sales climbed by 3% in November.

Excluding the auto sector, Canadian retail sales increased by 0.1% to 33.811 billion Canadian dollars in November. From a year ago, sales excluding auto rose by 3.4%.

Statistics Canada also unveiled inflation data for December 2016. The consumer price index advanced by 1.5% from December 2015 following a 1.2% rise in November. On a monthly basis, prices dropped by 2.4% after falling by 0.4% in the prior month.

Analysts had expected annual inflation to come in at 1.7% and the monthly reading to be unchanged.
