An energy crisis could push millions of Britons into poverty overnight. Record-high energy costs and extreme weather conditions may significantly reduce the savings of most UK residents who will have to learn how to keep their homes comfortable on a tight budget.
Simple everyday pleasures available to every citizen of Russia turned out to be a luxury for Britons who are now facing all-time-high energy bills. According to Bloomberg, the average domestic energy bill could increase by 693 pounds over the next year.
Bloomberg experts predict that customers on a default tariff could see gas cost 81% more, with electricity prices going up by 36%. The cost of heating a home, taking a shower, or cooking a meal rose to new heights for millions of people in the UK as household energy prices hit a record.
The situation is aggravated by the fact that like other European countries, the UK refuses to pay for Russian commodities, including gas, in rubles. Reportedly, the government is liaising with British companies that may be hit hard by Russian President Vladimir Putin's call for gas deals to be paid in the Russian currency.
