As many as 8,000 luxury cars to be sent to Russia are now stuck in Zeebrugge, Belgium, due to anti-Russian sanctions, The Wall Street Journal reported.
The premium vehicles that are now blocked from being shipped to Russia include the newest models of brands Cadillac, Mercedes, and Lexus.
According to Marc Adriansens, director of the port's International Car Operators terminal, the cars cannot be exported to Russia due to the luxury ban. He says they will stay in the Zeebrugge port for as long as they find alternative markets.
Earlier this month, the European Union announced the fifth package of sanctions against Russia, including a ban on entering EU ports under the Russian flag and restrictions on trucking companies from Russia and Belarus. An embargo on Russian coal will take effect in August 2022.
Notably, Western economies were also hit by restrictive measures against Russia as fuel and food prices skyrocketed. Meanwhile, Russia called the move an economic war and stated it expected such a turn of events.
