A Delta Air Lines flight headed for Detroit, Michigan had to return to Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport after an unfortunate incident. Maggots dropped onto a passenger from the overhead baggage compartment, as reported by Detroit TV station FOX 2.
A passenger on the Airbus A330-300, Philip Schotte, narrated that the affected passenger was in a state of panic, attempting to fend off the maggots. The source of the maggots was traced back to another passenger's suitcase.
Further details emerged reporting that flight attendants later discovered a decayed fish, wrapped in a newspaper, in a passenger's suitcase. The offensive item was then relocated to the rear of the aircraft.
Delta Airlines offered an apology to the customers on board Flight 133 from Amsterdam to Detroit. "Their journey was disrupted due to a suitcase that was not packed appropriately," stated Delta Airlines. "The plane returned to the boarding gate and passengers were booked onto the next available flight. The aircraft was taken out of service to be thoroughly cleaned."
The passengers affected by this delay were provided with compensation in the form of hotel accommodation, a $30 meal voucher, and 8,000 air miles.
