Baker Hughes Inks Contracts With Petrobras To Deploy 77 Km Of Flexible Pipe Systems In Brazil

Baker Hughes, an energy technology firm, has entered into extensive contracts with Petrobras (Petroleo Brasileiro S.A.) for the provision of 77 kilometers of flexible piping systems designated for Brazil’s pre-salt fields. This agreement, secured on October 15, 2024, was the result of an open tender process.

The project spans multiple years and encompasses the delivery of risers and flowlines essential for hydrocarbon production, as well as gas and water injection systems. It includes comprehensive support for storage, maintenance, and installation of the equipment.

Scheduled to commence delivery in mid-2026, these systems will be employed in Petrobras’ Buzios, Libra, Berbigao, Sururu, and Sepia fields. A major component of the project aims to tackle the problem of stress-induced corrosion cracking due to CO2 (SCC-CO2), which poses a significant challenge in pre-salt fields with high CO2 concentrations.

The flexible pipes provided by Baker Hughes have a track record of success in mitigating such issues, particularly as gas reinjection practices are utilized to minimize flaring and enhance oil recovery rates.

Petrobras has pledged to curb the release of CO2 emissions in its operations, and CO2 sequestration is a pivotal strategy for producing barrels with a lower carbon footprint.

The production of these systems will take place at the Baker Hughes facility in Niteroi, Brazil, a key supplier of flexible piping solutions to the industry, employing a substantial workforce in the state of Rio de Janeiro.
