The European Union (EU) has decided to halt its planned tariffs on U.S. goods after President Trump announced a pause on a significant portion of his administration’s tariffs, which included measures against Europe. "We want to give negotiations a chance," stated EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. The EU will delay its countermeasures for a 90-day period in light of this development. Similarly, Trump declared a 90-day suspension of reciprocal tariffs on all partners, excluding China, which continues to face higher duties. Although the U.S. will maintain a 25% tariff on European metals and automobiles, the wider 20% tariff has been temporarily suspended. The EU had initially prepared retaliatory tariffs on products such as soybeans and motorcycles. Von der Leyen also mentioned that "preparatory work on further countermeasures continues" and affirmed that "all options remain on the table." An EU spokesperson confirmed that the bloc is prepared for any potential outcome and is maintaining communication with U.S. officials, even though no additional negotiations are currently arranged.
