Wheat Futures Rebound on Renewed Trade Talks

Wheat futures have climbed to over $5.25 per bushel, continuing their recovery from a recent eight-month low of $5.05 observed on April 29. This upward movement is primarily due to increasing optimism surrounding the renewed trade discussions between the United States and China, which have positively influenced investor confidence. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, along with chief trade negotiator Jamieson Greer, are slated to engage in high-level talks with China’s top economic official in Switzerland over the weekend. These discussions could serve as a significant step towards resolving the ongoing trade conflict that has been affecting global markets. Domestically, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) latest weekly crop progress report has elevated the good-to-excellent rating for the U.S. winter wheat crop to 51%, marking a two percentage point increase from the previous week and representing the highest rating for this period since 2020. Market participants are also anticipating the USDA's May supply and demand report, scheduled for release next Monday, with expectations that it will indicate stable wheat stock levels.
