US 10-Year Yield Softens after Auction

The yield on the 10-year US Treasury note decreased to 4.32% on Tuesday, down by 6 basis points from the two-week high seen earlier in the day. This change occurred as investors increased their purchases of long-term government debt following a robust auction for the 10-year note. The Federal Reserve acquired nearly $15 billion worth of notes in this auction, marking its highest purchase since 2021, as it attempts to align with its recent, more moderate pace of quantitative tightening. The central bank is largely anticipated to keep interest rates steady in its announcement tomorrow, though it may offer perspectives on the economic repercussions of former President Trump’s trade policies. Trade negotiations between the United States and various Asian nations are set to resume this week, yet talks with China have seemingly hit a pause. Regarding economic data, the ISM services report indicated expansion, adding optimism following last week's positive employment report. However, these positive data points contrast with signs of economic stress linked to trade disputes, including the contraction in GDP for the first quarter, increased imports ahead of new tariffs, and a significant drop in port activity.
