FX.co ★ US Imports Hit Record High Amid Tariff-Driven Surge

In March 2025, U.S. imports of goods and services surged by $17.8 billion, or 4.4%, reaching an all-time high of $419.0 billion. This increase was driven by businesses and consumers boosting their purchases ahead of impending price increases due to newly announced tariffs by the Trump administration. Consumer goods led the way, climbing by $22.5 billion, largely fueled by a remarkable $20.9 billion increase in pharmaceutical imports. Additionally, capital goods imports saw a rise of $3.7 billion, reflecting heightened demand for computer accessories. Meanwhile, automotive imports experienced a $2.6 billion uptick, mainly due to increased passenger car purchases. On the other hand, imports of industrial supplies and materials saw a decline of $10.7 billion, primarily because of reductions in finished metal shapes, nonmonetary gold, and crude oil. Service imports saw a slight decrease of $0.1 billion, as a $0.4 billion reduction in travel was not fully offset by a $0.2 billion gain in transport services.
