Housing starts in Canada fell by 15% in January 2026 from the previous month to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 238,049 units, well below market expectations of 263,300 and the lowest level in five months. Urban housing starts in centres with populations over 10,000 declined by 18.7% to 218,182 units, while rural starts were estimated at 20,487 units.
