Sweden posted a trade surplus of SEK 2.9 billion in May 2026, reversing a deficit of SEK 0.1 billion in the same month a year earlier, as exports grew more rapidly than imports. Exports increased 9% year-on-year to SEK 180.8 billion, supported by stronger shipments to both EU markets (up 11.8% to SEK 103.2 billion) and non-EU countries (up 5.4% to SEK 77.6 billion). Imports rose at a slower pace of 7.2% to SEK 177.9 billion, reflecting higher purchases from both EU partners (up 5.6% to SEK 119.8 billion) and non-EU countries (up 10.5% to SEK 58.1 billion).
Over the January–May period, the trade surplus narrowed sharply to SEK 7.5 billion from SEK 36.1 billion a year earlier, as exports grew by 1% while imports increased at a faster rate of 5%. On a seasonally adjusted basis, the monthly trade surplus in May inched up to SEK 0.7 billion from SEK 0.6 billion in April.
