Hungary Retail Sales Growth Slows to 7-Month Low

Retail sales in Hungary increased by 3.0% year-on-year in June 2026, slowing from a 4.8% rise in May. This was the weakest annual growth since November 2025, reflecting softer demand across most categories of the retail sector.

Non-food product sales grew at a slower pace (5.1% vs 7.3% in May), with decelerations recorded in:

  • Manufactured goods in non-specialized shops (3.9% vs 5.2%)
  • Furniture and electrical goods (5.1% vs 5.3%)
  • Pharmaceutical, medical goods and cosmetic articles (7.8% vs 9.2%)
  • Textile, clothing and footwear (0.2% vs 7.3%)
  • Mail-order and online sales (5.2% vs 14.5%)
  • Perfume (10.1% vs 13.9%)

Automotive fuel sales swung from strong growth to a slight contraction (-0.2% vs 8.2%), while the expansion in food product sales also moderated (1.8% vs 3.1%). Within food retailing, non-specialized food and beverage stores posted weaker growth (3.7% vs 4.6%), further weighing on the overall result.

On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, retail trade volumes fell by 0.4% in June, reversing a 0.7% increase recorded in the previous month.
