Eurozone Construction PMI Ticks Higher in July but Still Signals Sector Contraction

The HCOB Eurozone Construction Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) improved in July 2026, rising to 44.3 from 42.8 in June, according to data updated on 6 August 2026. While the month‑over‑month gain points to a moderation in the sector’s downturn, the headline figure remains well below the 50.0 threshold that separates expansion from contraction.

The July reading suggests that construction activity across the euro area continued to decline, but at a slower pace than in the previous month. The improvement from June’s 42.8 indicates some easing in negative momentum, with the sector showing tentative signs of stabilisation rather than a sharp rebound.

On a month‑over‑month comparison basis, the “Actual” figure for July reflects a less severe contraction than the “Previous” comparison for June, which had captured a steeper drop relative to the prior month. Investors and policymakers will be watching upcoming PMI releases closely to determine whether July’s uptick marks the beginning of a gradual recovery or just a temporary pause in the sector’s weakness.
