Brazil Job Creation Slows Sharply in July

Brazil generated 58,568 formal jobs in July 2026, falling short of market expectations of 112,000 and well below the 145,161 jobs created in June. The monthly balance reflected 2,262,888 hires and 2,204,320 dismissals.

Four of the five main economic sectors posted positive job creation. Services led with a net gain of 24,098 positions, followed by construction (+12,691), agriculture (+12,523), and industry (+11,315). Commerce was the only sector in the red, with a net loss of 2,056 jobs.

Twenty-two of Brazil’s 27 states recorded positive employment balances. São Paulo led the gains, adding 17,814 jobs, followed by Mato Grosso (+5,766) and Minas Gerais (+5,199). Among the states with negative results, Espírito Santo saw the largest contraction, with 2,605 jobs lost, followed by Rio Grande do Sul (-903) and Tocantins (-366).

The total stock of active formal employment contracts reached 48,082,866 in July, an increase of 0.12% compared with June.
