Yen Surges on Suspected Rate Check

The Japanese yen hovered around 158.8 per dollar on Thursday, easing slightly after a sharp overnight rally driven by speculation that authorities had conducted a rate check—an exercise in which officials contact banks to confirm exchange rates and implicitly signal the possibility of intervention. The yen had surged as much as 1.2% to 158.21 in New York trading on Wednesday, keeping markets on edge for any indication that policymakers might step in again to support the currency.

The yen had fallen to its weakest levels in roughly 40 years in late July, pressured by wide interest rate differentials, mounting fiscal concerns, and elevated energy and import costs. That slump came shortly before Tokyo and Washington carried out a joint yen-buying operation.

On the policy front, Bank of Japan board member Hajime Takata raised the prospect of larger-than-usual or consecutive interest rate hikes to address mounting inflationary pressures. Governor Kazuo Ueda likewise emphasized that policymakers must pay closer attention to upside risks to prices when setting monetary policy, reinforcing expectations that a rate increase is likely later this month.
