Brazil Trade Surplus Beats Forecasts

Brazil’s trade surplus expanded by 23.8% year-on-year to $7.39 billion in August 2026, exceeding market expectations of $7.14 billion. Exports grew 12.2% to $33.16 billion, driven by an 11.4% rise in agricultural shipments, a 16.4% increase in exports from extractive industries, and a 10.2% gain in manufactured goods.

On the export side, growth was led by higher overseas sales of live animals, unroasted coffee, and soybeans in agriculture; copper ores and concentrates, nickel ores and concentrates, and crude petroleum in extractive industries; and poultry meat, soybean meal and other animal feeds, and fuel oils in manufacturing.

Imports climbed 9.2% to $25.76 billion. Agricultural imports advanced 7.4%, while manufacturing imports rose 13.4%. In contrast, imports from extractive industries dropped 41.3%.

By trading partner, Brazil’s trade with the European Union was particularly robust, with exports to the bloc surging 46.4%. However, the trade surplus with China and Argentina narrowed, and trade with the United States resulted in a deficit.
