Japan’s Composite PMI Eases in September, Signaling Slight Cooling in Private Sector Momentum

Japan’s private sector growth showed signs of cooling in September 2026, as the combined Manufacturing & Services PMI edged down to 52.50 from 53.50 in August. While the indicator remains above the 50-point threshold that separates expansion from contraction, the month-over-month decline suggests a modest loss of momentum in overall business activity.

The latest data, updated on 24 September 2026, indicate that the pace of improvement in Japan’s economy has slowed compared with the previous month’s stronger reading. August’s figure of 53.50 reflected a more robust expansion relative to July, whereas September’s 52.50 points to continued growth, but at a more moderate rate.

On a month-over-month comparison basis, the “Actual” September reading highlights easing gains in both manufacturing and services relative to August. The “Previous” comparison underscores that August had already represented an acceleration versus the month before, making September’s softer result a potential sign that earlier momentum is starting to normalize rather than accelerate further.
