Imports to Hong Kong surged 60% year-on-year to USD 739.1 billion in August 2026, accelerating from a 41% increase in July. This was the fastest pace of import growth since August 1968. The sharp rise was mainly driven by higher purchases of electrical machinery, apparatus, appliances and parts (+64.5%), office machines and automatic data processing machines (+61.4%), as well as telecommunications, sound recording and reproducing equipment (+50.4%).
By origin, the strongest growth among major suppliers came from Korea (+265.8%), the United Kingdom (+111.6%), India (+107.7%), Malaysia (+78.7%), Vietnam (+67.2%), and the Mainland (+54.1%). Over the first eight months of 2026 as a whole, imports were up 43.2% compared with the same period a year earlier.
