Switzerland’s non-seasonally adjusted unemployment rate stood at 3.0% in September 2026, unchanged for the third consecutive month. The number of unemployed people declined by 1,064 from August to 140,480.
At the cantonal level, the sharpest drops in unemployment were observed in Zürich (-355), St. Gallen (-224), Aargau (-204), Fribourg (-185), and Vaud (-147). The overall decline in unemployment was confined to the industrial sector (-548) and the services sector (-546).
Among young people aged 15 to 24, the unemployment rate edged down to 3.3%, from 3.4% in August, when it had reached a five-and-a-half-year high. The number of unemployed youth fell by 332 to 14,346. For workers aged 50 to 64, the unemployment rate slipped to 2.6% from 2.7%, as the number of unemployed in this age group decreased by 201 to 38,482.
In contrast, the number of registered job seekers increased by 466 to 44,199. On a seasonally adjusted basis, the unemployment rate remained stable at 3.1% for the fifth consecutive month.
