Germany’s industrial production increased by 0.7% month on month in September 2026, outperforming market expectations for no change but slowing from a downwardly revised 1.0% gain in August. The expansion was largely driven by a 17.1% surge in automotive output, following two subdued months linked in part to model changeovers and factory holidays. Pharmaceutical production also rebounded, rising 8.0% after two weaker months.
These gains were partially offset by a 2.6% decline in construction output, while production of machinery and equipment fell 6.5%, reversing a 5.8% increase in August. Excluding energy and construction, industrial output rose 1.7%, supported by higher production of capital goods (3.0%), consumer goods (0.8%), and intermediate goods (0.1%).
Outside industry, energy production dropped 1.2%. At the same time, output in energy‑intensive industrial sectors increased by 0.8%. On a year-on-year basis, overall industrial production was up 0.4%.
