FX.co ★ Get to Know Jia Jia, China's Super Realistic Humanoid Robot

The female robot has been called a 'robot goddess' by her hoards of online fans, and some who met her at a recent exhibition were taken aback by her lifelike appearance. Asians who appreciate submissiveness and humility in women, endowed an ultra-realistic android with the face of a very pretty Chinese woman with these qualities.

The USTC researchers spent three years developing Jia Jia, an apparent labor of love. And they aren't done yet. Team director Chen Xiaoping says he hopes to develop and refine their creation, equipping it with artificial intelligence through deep learning and the ability to recognize people's facial expressions. This group of researchers were also the masterminds behind the service robot 'Kejia' that took home first place at the RoboCup championship in 2014.

Jia Jia's limited motion and stilted speech shouldn't leave anyone in any doubt she's a robot. However, she looks fairly realistic, with a flexible plastic face, long flowing brown hair, and an eye-catching gold dress. According to the team's director, Chen Xiaoping, particular attention was paid to her eye movements and lip synchronisation. He told reporters at the unveiling that the team's next step is to make it possible for her to laugh and cry. In addition, the robot girl is endowed with the ability to study. Android like tру communication, because it is engineered to interact with people. At the sight of the interlocutor, the polite Jia Jia bows her head.

During the press conference, someone from the audience tried taking a picture of her. Her response – “Don't come too close to me when you are taking a picture. It will make my face look fat.”

As she is considered a “priceless” invention, there are no solid plans to mass produce her – yet. But maybe in the near future, we will be able to deeply connect with humanoid robots in our everyday lives.

Recall that not so long ago a resident of Hong Kong showed the world a similar creation - the Mark 1 anthropomorphic robot with a face Scarlett Johansson. Like Jia Jia, Mark 1 is capable of basic human-like interaction, command responses, and movement. Mark 1 actually outperforms Jia Jia in that the former can move its limbs, turn its head, bow, smirk, and wink.
