China will develop its domestic chip manufacturing to overcome US sanctions, Huawei’s CEO Eric Xu said. He added that China’s chip industry will be “reborn” as a result of American restrictions.
The CEO of Huawei sharply criticized US sanctions against the Chinese tech industry, which would reportedly spur the development of China’s domestic chip manufacturing. “I believe China’s semiconductor industry will not sit idly by, but take efforts around self-strengthening and self-reliance,” Xu said. “For Huawei, we will render our support to all such self-saving, self-strengthening and self-reliance efforts of the Chinese semiconductor industry,” he stated.
Earlier, US authorities imposed export restrictions against China, banning US companies from selling their products to Huawei as well as other companies that are accused of cooperating with the Chinese government and the military.
While China’s tech sector strives to achieve full self-sufficiency, it has been severely affected by the inability to acquire chip manufacturing technologies, especially American ones. No Chinese company can currently compete with semiconductor manufacturing giants from the United States, Taiwan, Japan, and South Korea. Furthermore, specialists note that chip manufacturers around the world use US-made equipment.
