World's largest home has 1788 rooms. Built in 1984, costing about $400M to $1.4B The extraordinary scale of Istana Nurul Iman officially crowns it as the largest residential palace on Earth, according to Guinness World Records. Serving as the official residence of the 29th Sultan of Brunei, Hassanal Bolkiah, and the central seat of the Bruneian government, this massive structure stands on the scenic banks of the Brunei River just outside the capital city of Bandar Seri Begawan.

Designed by the renowned Filipino architect Leandro V. Locsin and completed in 1984 to coincide with Brunei's independence from the United Kingdom, the complex reflects a beautiful architectural blend of traditional Malay shapes and majestic Islamic golden domes. Spanning an eye-watering 200,000 square meters of floor space—which equals more than 2.1 million square feet—the interior of the palace functions much like an ultra-luxurious private city. The layout boasts a mind-boggling 1,788 rooms and 257 bathrooms, illuminated by over 51,000 light bulbs and 564 individual chandeliers. Beyond the basic living quarters, the estate features five swimming pools, a private mosque capable of holding 1,500 worshippers, a 110-car garage, and highly specialized, fully air-conditioned stables built specifically to house 200 of the Sultan's prized polo ponies. The original construction cost of this monumental home was estimated at $1.4 billion in 1984. Funded by the nation's immense oil and natural gas wealth, that original price tag would easily surpass $4.6 billion in today's economy when accounting for decades of inflation. The name Istana Nurul Iman itself carries deep cultural significance, translating beautifully from its Arabic and Persian roots to mean "Palace of the Light of Faith". While access is strictly private throughout most of the year, the palace opens its massive doors to the public during the annual Islamic celebration of Hari Raya Aidilfitri, welcoming tens of thousands of citizens inside for three days to feast and greet the royal family personally.
