Retail sales in Portugal rose 4.6% year-on-year in January 2026, accelerating from a downwardly revised 2.8% increase in December. Growth strengthened in both food, beverages and tobacco (5.1% vs 3.6%) and non-food products (4.9% vs 4.3%), with notable gains in fuels (0.4% vs -3%), household goods (7.1% vs 4.4%), and textiles, clothing and footwear (9.1% vs 5.1%).
By contrast, growth slowed in sales of computers, telecommunications equipment, books, and other goods in specialized stores (1.1% vs 5.4%), as well as in pharmaceutical products (7.8% vs 10.1%). Sales via mail, Internet, and other non-store channels declined by 0.3%, following a 10.2% surge in December. On a monthly basis, retail sales increased 2% in January, rebounding from a 3.1% drop in December.
