Slovakia’s current account recorded a surplus of €109.8 million in May 2026, compared with a deficit of €156.4 million in the same month a year earlier. This was the country’s first monthly surplus in nearly three years, following an extended run of consecutive deficits. The improvement was driven chiefly by a 90.4% year-on-year surge in the goods balance to €447.2 million, the highest level in more than a decade. The services balance also strengthened, with its surplus rising by 28.7% to €52.5 million. By contrast, the secondary income balance continued to weigh on the current account, although its deficit narrowed by 14.6% to €107.6 million. The primary income balance deteriorated, with its deficit widening by 7.8% to €282.2 million. Over the first five months of 2026, Slovakia’s cumulative current account deficit narrowed to €843.3 million.
