Banco Santander S.A. (BNC.L, BSBR, SAN), a leading financial group, announced on Tuesday that it has detected unauthorized access to a database hosted by a third-party provider.
In response, Santander immediately implemented measures to contain the incident. These measures included blocking the compromised database access and enhancing fraud prevention controls to safeguard affected customers.
An investigation revealed that certain information pertaining to customers in Santander Chile, Spain, and Uruguay, as well as both current and some former employees, had been accessed.
Importantly, the bank confirmed that the compromised database did not contain any transactional data or credentials that would enable transactions, including online banking details and passwords.
Santander assured that customer data in other Santander markets and business segments remain unaffected, and that its operations and systems are functioning normally.
The bank has informed regulators and law enforcement agencies and is cooperating fully with them. Affected customers and employees are being contacted directly.
