Meta-owned WhatsApp is testing a new feature in Android version 2.24.15.5 that will allow users to translate messages into different languages directly within the app.
This feature aims to integrate Google's Live Translate functionality into WhatsApp chats, making it easier for users to translate foreign texts without needing to leave the app.
According to WABetaInfo, a feature tracking website, users updating to this beta version will receive a notification confirming the availability of transcriptions for incoming voice messages. To use this feature, users will need to download a language pack or voice message transcription. The supported languages currently include English, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, and Hindi. Notably, the audio is analyzed and transcribed locally on the user's device, ensuring privacy as the voice messages remain encrypted.
The live transcription option remains under development and is not yet accessible to beta testers. Therefore, users on the latest WhatsApp for Android beta version via the Google Play Beta program might not have access to it. The availability of this feature on the WhatsApp for Android beta app is still uncertain.
In addition, WhatsApp for Android is reportedly working on a live transcription feature for voice messages. This would allow users to generate transcriptions for the voice messages they send or receive. This feature may be signaled by a new banner appearing below a voice message, offering the option to obtain a transcription.
