UK Consumer Confidence Improves for Second Month

In March 2025, the GfK Consumer Confidence Index in the UK rose by one point to reach -19. This marks its second monthly increase in a row following scores of -22 in January and -20 in February. The latest figure surpassed market predictions, which had estimated a score of -21. Despite this, the index remains in negative territory, indicating persistent consumer caution. Consumer expectations for the general economic outlook over the next year improved, rising by two points to -29. However, optimism regarding personal finances for the coming year slightly decreased, falling by one point to +1. The major purchase index, measuring confidence in acquiring high-value items, held steady at -17. Neil Bellamy, Consumer Insights Director at NIQ GfK, commented, "Consumer confidence remains subdued, maintaining a headline score of -19 for March." He further noted that while the current stability is a positive sign, “it wouldn’t take much to unsettle the fragile consumer mood.”
