In February 2025, UK car production experienced an 11.6% decline compared to the previous year, resulting in a total output of 82,178 vehicles. This decrease was influenced by subdued domestic and international demand, as well as model transitions and plant restructuring efforts. Domestic production saw a significant drop of 22.3%, equating to 18,401 units, while exports fell by 8%, amounting to 63,777 units. The European Union continued to be the primary destination for UK car exports, accounting for 53.5%, followed by the United States at 19.7% and China at 6.3%.
Production of battery electric, plug-in hybrid, and hybrid vehicles decreased by 5.6%, totaling 27,398 units, yet their market share experienced a slight increase, rising to 37.1% from the previous year's 36.3%. The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders has highlighted the critical need for strategies to bolster the UK's competitive edge and boost consumer demand, with a particular focus on the electric vehicle sector.
