Canada Adds More Jobs than Expected

In April 2025, Canada's employment figures showed an increase of 7,400 jobs, surpassing the anticipated growth of 2,500, following a decrease of 32,600 in March. This positive change was primarily fueled by a significant rise of 31,500 in full-time positions, even as part-time employment diminished by 24,200. Notably, employment in the public administration sector saw an upswing of 37,000 jobs (a 3.0% increase), largely due to the hiring of temporary staff for federal election-related activities. The finance, insurance, real estate, rental, and leasing sector also experienced a boost, adding 24,000 jobs (a 1.6% rise). However, job losses were recorded in the manufacturing industry, which saw a decrease of 31,000 jobs (down by 1.6%), and in the wholesale and retail trade sector, which declined by 27,000 positions (a 0.9% drop). Provincially, employment grew in Quebec, Alberta, Manitoba, and Newfoundland and Labrador. In contrast, there were job declines in Ontario and Nova Scotia, while employment levels remained mostly stable in other regions.
