East Timor Consumer Prices Falls in May

In May 2025, East Timor experienced a 0.2% year-on-year decrease in consumer prices, a reversal from the 0.5% increase noted in April. This was the first reduction observed in three months, primarily due to declines in food and non-alcoholic beverage prices, which dropped by 0.3% compared to a 1.0% rise previously. Additionally, deflation continued in transport, with a slight decrease to -1.8% from -1.7% in April, and in alcohol and tobacco, which showed a smaller deflation rate of -0.9% compared to -1.4%. The communication sector held steady at a deflation rate of -0.9%. Meanwhile, the growth in prices for furnishing, household equipment, and routine household maintenance slowed to 0.7% from 0.8%. Conversely, there was a slight inflationary uptick in clothing, with prices nudging up to 0.9% from 0.8%, while rates for recreation and culture (0.6%) and education (0.4%) remained unchanged. On a month-to-month basis, consumer prices reduced by 0.2% in May, following a 0.1% increase in the previous month.
