Canada Small Business Sentiment Improves to 4-Month High

In June 2025, Canada's CFIB Business Barometer long-term index, which gauges the twelve-month outlook among small businesses, rose by 7.3 points to reach 47.3, up from 40 in May. This increase represents the highest level since February and is primarily attributed to improved expectations among both exporters, whose confidence increased to 36.1 from 26.4, and importers, whose outlook improved to 37.4 from 28.9. Simultaneously, businesses not involved in international trade also reported enhanced sentiment, with the index climbing to 43.4 from 34.2. Despite this optimistic trend, hiring intentions remain restrained. Plans for full-time staffing show minimal progress, indicating a lack of enthusiasm for expanding payrolls, and part-time employment trends are also subdued, reflecting a cautious approach to hiring. Additionally, the short-term index, which assesses three-month forecasts, increased to 47.7 in June, compared to 42.4 in the previous month.
