UK Retail Sales Outlook Improves as CBI Distributive Trades Indicator Rises from Record Lows

In a much-needed sign of potential recovery for the UK retail sector, the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) Distributive Trades Survey revealed an improvement in July 2025. Following a challenging period in June where the indicator hit a record low of -46, the latest results show a rise to -34 for July 2025. This data, updated on 28 July 2025, suggests that while challenges remain, there may be a glimmer of hope for retailers.

The uptick comes after months of economic difficulty, with retailers grappling with declining consumer confidence and shifting spending patterns. Although the indicator remains in negative territory, the less steep decline presents a cautiously optimistic outlook for the coming months.

Industry experts will be closely monitoring future data releases to ascertain whether this improvement represents a sustainable trend or merely a brief respite in the sector's recovery journey. The coming months will be critical for UK retailers as they navigate the post-pandemic landscape and adapt to consumers' evolving demands.
