The unemployment rate in the United Kingdom held steady at 4.7% for the three months leading up to July 2025, matching both the previous period and market predictions. This marks the highest rate since the three months ending in August 2021, and it reflects increases in the number of individuals unemployed for durations of 6 to 12 months and more than 12 months, compared to the prior period. Year-over-year, unemployment rose across all duration categories. In contrast, the number of employed individuals rose by 232,000, reaching a record high of 34.2 million, primarily fueled by a rise in full-time employment. Additionally, there was an increase in the number of individuals holding second jobs, now representing 3.8% of total employment, indicating that more workers are seeking additional income streams. Lastly, the economic inactivity rate ticked up slightly to 21.1%, which is 0.1 percentage point higher than the previous period.
