In August 2025, there was a notable 16% reduction in housing starts in Canada, with the number falling to 245,791 units from a revised figure of 293,537 in July. This was significantly below the anticipated 277,500 units. However, in urban areas with populations exceeding 10,000, there was a 10% year-over-year increase in housing starts, reaching a total of 18,408 units. Montréal emerged as a leader with an impressive 32% rise, primarily fueled by multi-unit developments, while Vancouver also saw a substantial 46% increase. In contrast, Toronto's housing starts remained consistent with levels observed in August 2024.
