Estonian Trade Gap Widens in August

In August 2025, Estonia's trade deficit expanded to EUR 263.7 million, up from EUR 200.9 million in the same month the previous year. This change was due to a decline in exports alongside a rise in imports. Exports saw a 2% year-on-year decrease, totaling EUR 1,425.8 million. This decline was driven by a significant drop in shipments to non-EU countries, which fell by 16%, while exports to EU countries experienced a modest increase of 3%. Noteworthy increases were observed in exports of textiles and textile articles (up by 12%), transport equipment (up by 11%), and agricultural products and food preparations (up by 5%).

On the import front, there was a 2% increase, with the total value reaching EUR 1,689.5 million. This rise was led by an 11% increase in purchases from non-EU countries, although imports from EU countries remained unchanged. Significant increases in imports were noted in wood and wood articles (up by 95%) and various manufactured articles (up by 53%).

For the first eight months of the year, the country recorded a trade deficit of EUR 2,512.4 million, widening from EUR 2,167.7 million in the same timeframe the previous year.
