US Core CPI Rises Less than Expected

In September 2025, core consumer prices in the United States—which exclude the volatile categories of food and energy—experienced a modest increase of 0.2% compared to the previous month. This marks a slowdown from the 0.3% rise observed in both August and July, and it fell just short of market predictions, which anticipated a 0.3% increase. The release of these figures was delayed by several weeks due to the ongoing US government shutdown, which temporarily halted operations at the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Within the various sectors, price increases decelerated for shelter (0.2% compared to 0.4% in August), transportation services (0.3% compared to 1%), and new vehicles (0.2% compared to 0.3%). Conversely, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) showed a rebound in the cost of medical care services, with prices increasing by 0.3% following last month's 0.1% decline, and a faster rise in apparel prices, which climbed by 0.7% compared to 0.5% previously. On an annual basis, core consumer prices saw a 3% rise in September.
