Dutch Household Spending Growth Hits 5-Month Low

In September 2025, household consumption in the Netherlands experienced a modest increase of 0.8% compared to the same month in the previous year. This indicates a deceleration from the 1.3% rise observed in August, marking the most minimal growth since May. The consumption of goods was essentially flat, with a mere 0.1% increase compared to 1.1% in August. This stagnation was primarily driven by reduced spending on food, beverages, and tobacco, which declined by 0.3% compared to a 0.9% increase previously, and a moderated rise in durable consumer goods, which saw a 0.2% growth against 2.1% earlier. Conversely, spending on other categories such as personal care products and energy saw a 0.4% rise, the first increase following a six-month decline. Concurrently, the growth in spending on services also diminished to 1.2% from 1.4%, as households marginally increased their expenditures on transport, communication, recreation, and culture. Notably, spending on services constitutes over half of the total household consumption. The October Consumption Radar, which monitors critical elements influencing household expenditure, signaled improved conditions from September, buoyed by rising stock prices and a more positive consumer outlook for the upcoming year.
