Dutch Trade Surplus Widens in September

In September 2025, the Netherlands experienced an expansion in its trade surplus, reaching EUR 12.13 billion, up from EUR 11.46 billion in the same month the previous year. This marks the largest surplus since March of this year. Export activities saw a 2.1% increase, totaling EUR 67.57 billion, bolstered by a 5.5% rise in sales to EU countries, although export sales to non-EU destinations declined by 2.7%. Commodity-wise, there was significant export growth in machines and transport equipment (7.6%), food and live animals (6.3%), and raw materials (5.9%). On the import front, there was a 1.4% uptick, amounting to EUR 55.45 billion, mainly due to a 3.3% rise in shipments from EU nations, despite a 0.4% decrease in imports from non-EU countries. Imports of beverages and tobacco surged by 35.9%, food and live animals increased by 11.7%, and mineral fuels and lubricants saw a 4.7% rise. However, over the period from January to September, the country's trade surplus shrank to EUR 90.87 billion, compared to EUR 93.79 billion during the same timeframe last year.
