Canada Wholesale Sales Rise More Than Expected

In September 2025, Canada's wholesale trade increased by 0.6% from the previous month, reaching C$85.9 billion. This marked the sixth rise in nine months, effectively reversing a 1.2% drop in August and surpassing initial forecasts of no growth. Five out of seven subsectors experienced growth, collectively contributing to about half of the overall wholesale activity. Notable gains were observed in the food, beverage, and tobacco sector (+1.6%), building materials and supplies (+1.9% to C$12.2 billion), and motor vehicles and parts (+1.6% to C$14.3 billion). Additionally, the mineral, ore, and precious metals category saw a significant increase of 22.8% to C$1.2 billion, while machinery and equipment sales in certain regions also bolstered the overall growth. Regionally, wholesale sales rose in seven provinces, with Alberta (up by 2.0% to C$9.9 billion), Quebec (+1.2%), and British Columbia (+2.2%) leading the way.
