Brazilian Real Weakens to 1-Month Low

The Brazilian real has weakened beyond 5.25 per US dollar, marking a one‑month low, as the country slips into a stagnation trap that leaves the economy exposed to a global flight toward safe‑haven assets. The latest GDP report confirmed near‑zero growth, with output expanding just 0.1% quarter-on-quarter, while investment plunged 3.5% and industrial activity shrank 0.7%, underscoring how elevated interest rates are suppressing domestic demand.

This stagnation is now colliding with the February 24 introduction of a 10% US import tariff on global shipments, jeopardizing the USD 4.34 billion trade surplus that currently acts as the economy’s main growth driver. Additional pressure has emerged as the US dollar climbed to a five‑week high after military strikes in Iran and the death of its Supreme Leader, developments that have effectively shut the Strait of Hormuz and intensified the rush into dollar assets.

Even with record tax revenues totaling 2.89 trillion reais, the Brazilian currency remains squeezed between a faltering domestic core and a shifting geopolitical landscape that sharply tilts in favor of the dollar as the ultimate safe haven.
