U.S. U6 Unemployment Rate Edges Down to 7.9% in February 2026

The broadest measure of U.S. labor underutilization, the U6 unemployment rate, declined to 7.9% in February 2026, down from 8.1% in January 2026. The latest figures, updated on 6 March 2026, point to a modest improvement in overall labor market conditions, including among part-time workers who would prefer full-time jobs and those marginally attached to the labor force.

This 0.2 percentage point decrease suggests that, beyond headline unemployment, some of the slack in the job market may be easing. While the change is incremental, it indicates that fewer workers are experiencing underemployment or tenuous attachment to the labor market compared with the start of the year.

Investors and policymakers often monitor the U6 rate alongside the standard unemployment measure to gauge the underlying strength and inclusiveness of labor market gains. The February move lower may be interpreted as a constructive signal for household income prospects and broader economic momentum in early 2026.
