New Zealand Trade Deficit Narrows Sharply in February, Easing to NZ$257M

New Zealand’s trade deficit narrowed significantly in February 2026, offering a tentative sign of improvement in the country’s external position. The trade balance came in at -NZ$257 million for the month, compared with a deficit of -NZ$627 million in January 2026, according to data updated on 19 March 2026.

On a month-over-month basis, the figures show a notable reduction in the size of the trade gap, as the February result represents a less negative balance than in the previous month. Under the comparison methodology, the “Actual” reading reflects the change between February and January 2026, while the “Previous” reading captured the change between January 2026 and the prior month.

While the trade balance remains in deficit, the smaller shortfall in February suggests some easing of external pressures relative to the start of the year. Further data in coming months will clarify whether this narrowing marks the beginning of a more sustained improvement in New Zealand’s trade position or a temporary adjustment.
