UK Construction PMI Edges Higher in March but Remains in Contraction Territory

The United Kingdom’s construction sector showed a modest improvement in March 2026, according to the latest S&P Global Construction PMI data released on 8 April 2026. The index rose to 45.6 in March from 44.5 in February, signaling a slower pace of contraction across the industry.

Despite the uptick, the PMI reading remains below the 50.0 threshold that separates expansion from contraction, indicating that activity in the UK construction sector is still declining overall, albeit less sharply than in the previous month. The March reading suggests that while conditions remain challenging, there are early signs of stabilisation compared with February 2026.

The back-to-back improvement may be seen as a tentative positive signal for the broader UK economy, as construction is closely tied to investment and confidence levels. However, with the index still firmly in contraction territory, the data underline that the sector has yet to return to growth momentum.
