Fed Reserve Balances Slip Below $3 Trillion as Liquidity Continues to Drain

Reserve balances held with Federal Reserve Banks in the United States declined to $2.980 trillion, down from a previous level of $3.184 trillion, according to data updated on 16 April 2026.

The nearly $200 billion drop in balances underscores a continued withdrawal of liquidity from the banking system. Reserve balances—funds that depository institutions hold on account at the Federal Reserve—play a key role in short-term funding conditions and can influence money market rates, bank lending capacity, and broader financial stability.

While the data point does not, on its own, reveal the underlying drivers of the decline, the move below the $3 trillion mark may draw attention from market participants monitoring the interaction between Fed policy, bank reserves, and funding markets in the months ahead.
